This page is for questions from beginning quilters, members and non members. Some of our more experienced quilters will try to answer these questions.
Question 1: Which sizes of rulers do you consider essential for quilting?
Answer a: Sizes? I think a 61/2 inch by 24 inch ruler is one of the most useful--in fact it was the only one I owned for several years. I like my 15 inch square for squaring up blocks, but in retrospect, a 12 inch square would have been a better choice. I also like my 6 1/2 inch square, a 1x6 inch ruler, and a 2 1/2 inch square. Ummm---it might have been quicker to list the ones I don't like, but that is in the order of usefulness for me. :)
Question 2: Do you have a favorite brand of ruler? Why?
Answer a. Any ruler that works for you should be your favorite. However I would suggest that whichever brand you choose, use the same brand for all your rulers. Markings are slightly different on each brand and if you stick to one brand you won't run the risk of imperfect cuts.
Answer b: Personally, I prefer the Olfa rulers because I find it easier to see the yellow markings against fabric than I do to see black ones--I would test various ones against bolts of fabric at the store to see which works for you. Also, you need to think about what measurement divisions you are likely to use--most come in 1/8th inch increments, but some only have the 1/4 inch.
