Pray for Becky L.
You probably have all gotten Becky's email, but just wanted to give you a head's up that she is very sick with bronchitis and pneumonia. She is at home, and Jack is taking good care of her, but she needs our prayers for a rapid recovery and for Jack not to catch what she has (she is contagious). Christmas blessings on all of you--and stay healthy!

Letty Bag
Laura invited a new friend to the Sewcial on Tuesday. She was working on tote bags (Letty Bag) that we all loved. She bought the pattern at the Singer store in Macon, but this is an online source for the pattern.

Today was a great day... we quilted, ate, socialized, and just had lots of fun! I really enjoyed it. Thanks to all who came.

Cherrie's recipe
Old-Fashioned Fruit Compote from Taste of Home, Dec./Jan., 2011
1 can (20 oz.) pineapple chunks, undrained
1pkg. (18 oz.) pitted dried plums
1 can (15 1/4 oz.) sliced peaches, undrained
1 can (11 oz.) mandarin oranges, undrained
1 jar ( 10 oz.) maraschino cherries, drained
1 pkg. (6 oz.) dried apricots
2 pkg. (3 1/2 oz. each) dried blueberries (I used some I froze last summer)
1/2 cup golden raisins
4 lemon peel strips
1 cinnamon stick (3 in.)
In a Dutch oven, combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 50-60 minutes or until fruit is tender. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Note: Next time I do this recipe, I plan to shorten the cooking time a little.

New Year's Day Mystery Quilt
I got a newsletter from Planet Patchwork yesterday--they will be doing another New Year's Day Mystery Quilt-a-thon. Just ask Becky L. and Nancy about the fun they had doing this last year. You can sign up to be notified when fabric requirements are posted. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

Hey friends, Joana just shared this with me, please pray for her son & her family. Thank you & happy quilting.
Luv ya,
Becky L.
Please pray for Benjamin. His doctor has some concerns about his liver and a
possible gallstone in a duct leading to the liver. He has a final
tomorrow morning and graduates Friday. We need to get an MRCT scheduled
for tomorrow afternoon, allowing time for him to get here after his
...final. His insurance ends Friday. Please pray for a positive result. Thanks.

Blog
I have just viewed the new blog, it's GREAT and I think it will really help us
stay in contact between meetings. It was so neat to see pictures of my friends
on the site. Oh yah, by the way I HAVE RETIRED (again) and I'm getting back in
the mood to Quilt again. Sorry I have been amiss this last year but between
work, grandkids and retired husband I have not had a free minute. So I'm back
and hope see all of you at the Christmas party on the 9th.

Tip of the day for last minute Christmas quilters
When sewing at 1:00 in the morning and you realize you sewed the entire last seam (the one you worked so hard to match up all the points) without any bobbin thread- it's time to go to bed.

Personally, I prefer the Olfa rulers because I find it easier to see the yellow markings against fabric than I do to see black ones--I would test various ones against bolts of fabric at the store to see which works for you. Also, you need to think about what measurement divisions you are likely to use--most come in 1/8th inch increments, but some only have the 1/4 inch.
Sizes? I think a 61/2 inch by 24 inch ruler is one of the most useful--in fact it was the only one I owned for several years. I like my 15 inch square for squaring up blocks, but in retrospect, a 12 inch square would have been a better choice. I also like my 6 1/2 inch square, a 1x6 inch ruler, and a 2 1/2 inch square. Ummm---it might have been quicker to list the ones I don't like, but that is in the order of usefulness for me. :)

Questions for our more experienced quilters
I have started a new page for questions and answers.
Questions and answers may be posted on the main page or you may put your Q&A under comments either under this post or on the new page. If posted on the main page, I will transfer them to the correct page. Again, it's important for a large number of members to participate if this blog is to be worthwhile, so, please, give us some input. Thanks to those of you who have already posted or commented. We appreciate your support.
"This page is for questions from beginning quilters, members and non members. Some of our more experienced quilters will try to answer these questions.
Question 1: Which sizes of rulers do you consider essential for quilting?
Question 2: Do you have a favorite brand of ruler? Why?"

Quilter's Last Will and Testament
The Quilter's Last Will And
Testament*
I,___________________________,being of sound mind (a statement which does not bear close examination) do hereby record my last will and
testament.
Knowing that __________________________________, my _________________ (husband, sister, or friend) hasn't the least understanding or
appreciation for, or for that matter, knowledge of my extensive fabric
collection, which collection is suitably deposited in sundry places for
safekeeping.
Knowing also that ___________________________ has already notified the local dumpster to pick up and dispose of the before mentioned
collection "willy-nilly" (the thought of which causes me a most severe case of
hives).
Therefore, I do will this collection and all other collections related to it, to my dear friend and fellow fabric preservationist,
_________________________.
It is my wish that she/he, upon hearing of my death and obtaining clear proof that I did not manage, although goodness knows I
tried, to take it with me, would come to my home post haste, before the
dumpster, and search out my collection which is similarly stored at her own
abode.
That she should rescue said collection and stack it in my quilting studio, along with my sewing machines, frames, old buttons, lace,
patterns, quilts, dolls and works in progress.
After she/he has done this, she/he should purchase refreshments for my friends not yet departed, which
friends are also her/his friends, and every last one shall be in that room and
they shall hold a wake and say lovely and kind things about me until they run
out and then they shall divide amongst themselves, by lot, my wonderful
collection.
I shall be hovering over that very spot until this is done. _______________________ shall then quit this spot and close the door, leaving
trivialities to those who do not understand. This is my wish on the matter.
